TALK
JOACHIM BROHM
THE POSTINDUSTRIAL CITY
Joachim Brohm is a documentary photographer who focuses on the changes of the urban landscape. Three works from his series “Areal” are displayed in the exhibition at MAST.
Since the 1980s his work is centered around the structures of urban development and suburban periphery, including aspects of architecture and mobility. During long-term projects he creates image-archives about places and edges redefined by urban, economic and cultural developments.
On the occasion of the talk at MAST, Brohm will introduce two of his most relevant photographic projects.
In Ruhrstadt (1988-1992) he captures details of the Ruhr region’s architecture and its urban landscape, condensing them to a “cultural landscape of the everyday” and depicting the transformations caused by human activity.
In Dessau Files (2015-2020) he takes a frequent look at the construction-site of the new Bauhaus Museum by Addenda Architects and also explores many of the remains and fragments of the city’s complex industrial and cultural history, including a photographic visit to the Bauhaus archives.
Urs Stahel, connected from remote, will be in conversation with Joachim Brohm.
Joachim Brohm lives and works as an artist in Leipzig, where he held a position as professor of photography between 1993 and 2021. Brohm’s photographs have been shown internationally and are part of major private and public collections. He has published a number of monographs, among them Ruhr (Steidl, 2007), Ohio (Steidl, 2009) and Typology 1979 (Mack, 2014) as well as recent collaborative projects like Cahiers Bauhaus Museum Dessau with Addenda Architects, Barcelona (Koenig Books 2019) as well as Two Rivers with American photographer Alec Soth (Koenig Books, 2019).
