Two Angels open the curtain and unveil Piero della Francesca's Madonna del Parto in Monterchi. A Madonna who shows from what wound God is generated: a Woman stands at the center of the mystery of the incarnation. In Piero's powerful icon, Mary holds up her full womb, and unfastens her robe to make manifest the enigma: it is a cosmos that generates and gives. The cry she utters in giving birth will be repeated under the Cross, and then again - but perhaps in joy - at the moment of the Assumption. In the image of this Woman, expectation and promise, anguish, hope, abandonment, come together without blurring and without age.
