The book Spectacular. An Exploration of Light accompanies the exhibition dedicated by Fondazione MAST to German artist Vera Lutter. The volume, edited by Francesco Zanot, features a wide selection of works focusing on the topics of industry, work, and large-scale infrastructures that pertain to transportation of people and goods. Spectacular presents all the works in the exhibition together with other photographs on the same topic, offering readers the opportunity to explore the career of one of the leading figures in contemporary photography through some of her most recurrent themes.
Vera Lutter's works are deeply connected with some of the oldest images and methods in the history of photography. They are created with a camera obscura. They require very long exposure times, so that whatever moves too fast in the frame is not captured. Like daguerreotypes, they are one-of-a-kind prints, because they are made directly on light sensitive paper, and they have a sculptural value, as the image adheres to and combines with the support on which it is imprinted. Like the film matrix of most analog photographs, they are negative images. Lutter brings to light the part of photography that is usually hidden. At the same time, she shows her subjects in a unique and surprising way, paradoxically using a representation method that is well-known and accessible to all and turning her photographs into spectacular visions.
