Wall-e
Andrew Stanton, USA, 2008, 98’, ITA

The Iron Giant
Brad Bird, USA, 1999, 86’, ITA

Set in the imaginary town of Rockwell during the Cold War, the film centers on Hogarth, a boy who is passionate about comic books and science fiction, and who befriends a huge metal robot that plummeted from outer space. The iron giant behaves like a child and has no idea of its own nature or its powers (indeed, when it feels threatened, it enters into aggressive mode and unsheathes an arsenal of weapons). Hogarth knows perfectly well that the world around him is not ready to welcome his strange friend and therefore does everything he can to keep him safe from prying eyes. This is a story of friendship and respect for that which is different, even when the latter appears to be a really dangerous robot. A cult classic of film animation from the man behind "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille".

The device is supposed to walk, talk and connect to social networks, simulating a 'best friend' for the somewhat shy and reclusive young man, but Ron's malfunctions initially seem to discourage him and sometimes embarrass him. It is precisely this new 'out-of-schedule' friend, however, that will allow Barney to discover true friendship.

Planet 51
Jorge Blanco, Spain, 2009, 91’, ITA

The film centers around Lem, a young alien (in our eyes) with green skin, who lives on Planet 51 in a small and quiet town with clean streets, green and well-kept lawns and white picket fences. The ambiance is that of a 1950s American dystopia. Lem's days pass quietly and carefree, as he dreams of becoming director of the city planetarium and of winning over the beautiful Neera, the quintessential girl next door. But Lem's everyday life is disrupted by Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker, an astronaut from Earth who fulfills his dream of being the first human to set foot on a new and unexplored planet. But Planet 51 isn't as unexplored as he may think. Because in reality Baker lands smack in Neera's lawn and immediately runs into the inhabitants of the very-explored Planet 51. Panicked, the captain flees and hides in the planetarium where Lem works. Lem will try to help the captain reach his command module so as not to miss his "connecting flight" for Planet Earth. In this film, the alien is the human being, who will learn many things from the inhabitants of Planet 51, including respect for others and protection of the environment.

Bumblebee
Travis Knight, USA, 2018, 114’

The film, which follows the story of the previous Transformers films, is set in 1987 when, fleeing the planet Cybertron where war with the Decepticons reigns, Bumblebee finds refuge in a dump in a small California seaside town. Charlie, a girl on the threshold of 18 and searching for her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee scarred by battles and unusable, but still in the form of a cute yellow Beetle. She decides to take it into her garage, unaware that it is actually an alien robot. When Bumblebee reveals himself, an unexpected friendship arises between them that will be put to the test. The link with the 1980s directly recalls the Transformers as we knew them back then: with the animated series and the toys. The film's young director, founder of Laika, director of Kubo and the Two Strings and close to a puppet cinema, manages to give the robot a truly intriguing and real look.
